My Job In 5: Laura Martin, capacity planning manager, Clays Printing

Describe your role

I am the capacity planning manager at Clays. I head up the team which is responsible for scheduling the production plan throughout the factory to meet our customers’ dates while also trying to maximise our productivity.  

What do you like best about your role?

I really enjoy the fast paced nature of our business and our department is right at the heart of it all, so there’s never a dull moment. The department also has close relationships with almost every other department in the business, so I get to work with a wide variety of people on a daily basis.

What new projects are you working on?

We have a real drive on continuous improvement here at Clays and I’m involved with several projects relating to this. One of these projects is on how we manage multiple editions through the business—by multiple edition I mean where we get an order for multiple end products but there are some common components, for example we may have a title that has three different covers but the text is all common (to keep it simple!).

How did you get into working in printing?

I have family who work in the factory here at Clays and that’s where I actually started, until an opportunity came up in production control which I jumped at, and never looked back!

What advice would you give to those looking to work in the industry?

I think you just need to get your foot in the door, and once you’re in be open-minded about the opportunities that come up because it may not lead to your end goal straight away but you are likely to gain valuable experience along the way and have a better understanding of the people and departments you may end up working alongside.
