Describe your role
I’m a bookseller at Wenlock Books, an independent bookshop in Shropshire. My job includes running the shop, social media accounts and Children’s Book Club, organising events and meeting with reps. I also keep the website going by writing blog posts and book reviews, designing graphics and keeping the events calendar up to date.
What do you like best about your role?
I enjoy the online side—talking about books, recommending books and engaging with customers outside the shop. I also love our Storytime parties for babies and toddlers and always look forward to the Children’s Book Club that I run on Saturdays.
Which new projects are you working on at the moment?
I’m currently planning our autumn/winter events which include a Books Are My Bag day, Civilised Saturday and Christmas.
What’s the best thing about working in bookselling?
Being able to talk about books with readers, bloggers and authors without needing an excuse! My job never feels like work which is such a dream come true. Also, Christmas begins in about July for booksellers, which is amazing.
What advice would you give to those looking to work in the industry?
Visit your local bookshop and get to know the staff and other customers, take part in as much as you can and get some work experience. I was offered my job after two weeks of work experience and at the time I knew hardly anything about books. Passion and the desire to learn are what is important.
