My Job in 5: Clara Nelson, head of publicity, marketing and online, Michael O'Mara Books

Describe your role.

I’m the new head of publicity, marketing and online at Michael O’Mara
Books. I work across all MoM titles, including our children’s titles from Buster
Books and MoM’s new imprint, LOM Art. It’s our job in PR and marketing to
think up new and creative ways to promote our titles online and offline.

What do you like best about your role?

Every day is different. I can be involved in anything ranging from pitching
authors and their books to the media, to liaising with bookshops for p.o.s.
My role is ever-changing, particularly now that so much of what we do is
online where we can talk directly to our readers, which for me is one of
the best bits about what I do.

Which great new titles are you working on?

I’m working on a fantastic new adult colouring title we publish in July
Animorphia: An Extreme Colouring and Search Challenge by Kerby
Rosanes which is gorgeous and we will be sending bookshops their
own colouring posters to do in shops to coincide with publication. I’m
also working with legendary DJ Bob Harris, Ed Burstell the c.e.o. of
Liberty, and on the launch of our LOM Art imprint.

What’s it like running both marketing and publicity?

It’s busy, but actually working on both marketing and publicity for the
publication of a title means you can work on creating one
communications campaign and set your budgets knowing exactly how
they are going to be spent and where. We work closely with our sales
team too, so it’s good to have an overview on a campaign of both the
marketing and the publicity.

What advice would you give to someone looking to work in the

Work experience is key, as is getting your foot in the door. Don’t think
too much about what department you want to be in to begin with.
Apply for everything and once you’ve got your foot in the door you can
then work out which department is right for you.
