My Job In 5: Becky McCarthy, Publicity and Marketing Assistant, Michael O'Mara Books

Describe your role

I’m the publicity and marketing assistant at Michael O’Mara Books. I support the department by carrying out general administrative tasks as well as posting on our social media channels, setting up competitions with third parties and running my own campaigns.

What do you like best about your role?

My role is very varied. I love the fact that I can be organising an event, liaising with journalists and writing press releases all in the space of one morning. Being busy suits my character and I enjoy the fast-paced nature of the department.

What great new titles are you working on at the moment?

I’m currently working on some fantastic titles from our children’s imprint, Buster Books. We’ve recently released an Alice in Wonderland Colouring Book which I have really relished promoting, particularly in light of the 150th year celebrations. The book I’m most excited to work on this autumn is our Dress Up Taylor Swift, for obvious reasons!

What specific skills do you think are useful in publicity?

I think the ability to prioritise tasks is vital. Publicity is a busy department with lots going on. The ability to adapt easily is equally as important too, you never know when new and exciting ideas will strike.

What advice would you give to those looking to work in the industry?

Try and get as much experience as possible. Make the most of any work placement by asking questions about the industry and specific departments. Keep in touch with people that you meet while interning, they can offer excellent advice and encouragement. I think perseverance is key. Keep applying and you will get there.
