September 2021: Non-fiction Previews

"We all desperately need a good laugh". This seems to have been the preoccupation of publishers acquiring for autumn 2021, and this month’s array of memoirs by comedians—including Mo Gilligan, Josh Widdicombe, Katherine Ryan, Paddy McGuinness, Jimmy Carr and (my favourite) Bob Mortimer—is the result.

The other “trend” is in this season’s selection of food and cookbooks, where, from Jamie Oliver’s Together to Nibbies short-listed Rebecca Wilson’s Family Comfort Food, the emphasis is on the warming and the familial. It all adds up to a lot of banking on the familiar, whether it be celebrity ...
