Contrary to my declaration last month—that August was the new September—I can now say that September is still September, e.g. blooming massive.

Two of the biggest names in fiction are out this month, though not on the same day, so I can’t draw any Oasis vs Blur race to number one comparisons: Sally Rooney’s hugely anticipated third novel Beautiful World, Where Are You (Faber) and Richard Osman’s sure-to-be-barnstorming The Man Who Died Twice (Viking).
