October 2021: Fiction Previews

October is a lovely month for reading I always think, as it gets colder and darker outside. Two of my favourite novelists have short story collections to tempt anyone to stay in and curl up: Roddy Doyle’s Life Without Children (Cape) tells of life under lockdown, with 10 stories mostly written over the past year. And Penelope Lively’s Metamorphosis (Fig Tree) contains stories from across her lengthy career. A début short story collection to look out for is Dark Neighbourhood (Fitzcarraldo Editions), from Vanessa Onwuemezi.
