October 2018 New Titles: Fiction Previews

It’s 28 degrees in the shade as I type this but there’s a distinct chill in the air surrounding my October preview. If I were permitted just one word to sum up the month (rather than the 8,000 or so you have before you) it would have to be "gothic".

Leading the charge is Sarah Perry’s follow-up to the all-conquering The Essex Serpent, Melmoth (Serpent’s Tail), a gothic horror triumph, and The House on Vesper Sands (W&N) by Paraic O’Donnell, which is a terrific Victorian-set mystery with a supernatural element.
