November 2016 New titles: Fiction Previews

Judging by the sales figures alone, short story collections can be seen as the poor relation to the novel. This month has the finest collection (throng? accumulation? cluster?) of literary short story collections that I can remember. There is something for every lover of the form, amid Petina Gappah’s Zimbabwe-set Rotten Row (Faber), Jeanette Winterson’s seasonal Christmas Days (Cape), Penelope Lively’s The Purple Swamp Hen and Other Stories (Fig Tree) or the compilation How Much the Heart Can Hold (Sceptre), which includes offerings from Carys Bray and Donal Ryan.
