There is much to commemorate this month, with the 75th anniversary of VE Day, the forthcoming 80th anniversaries of Dunkirk and the Battle of Britain and, goodness, the 500th anniversary of the Field of the Cloth of Gold too. As I’ve written previously, the fact that so many compelling individual stories of life during the Second World War continue to emerge, eight decades later, should impress on us that the legacy of conflict is a profound one which continues down the generations.
