In a tremendously busy month middle-grade fiction dominates, with a clutch of highly fancied books from new and existing talent. My pick for Book of the Month is Thomas Taylor’s Malamander, a wildly imaginative mystery set in the atmospheric town of Eerie-on-Sea.

Look out too for Rumblestar, first in a new trilogy from Abi Elphinstone; Jessica Townsend’s Wundersmith in paperback; and excellent débuts from Anna Fargher, Judith Eagle and Dominique Valente.
