Happy New Year! A relatively quiet month for big names gives new talent a chance to shine in January. Lesley Parr follows her excellent début, The Valley of Lost Secrets, with a second historical adventure, When the War Came Home. Set in rural Wales in the aftermath of the First World War, it’s my January Book of the Month.

Also highly recommended is The Hunt for the Nightingale by Sarah Ann Juckes, a YA writer who makes her middle-grade début with an incredibly moving portrait of grief and the power of nature, beautifully illustrated by Sharon King-Chai. There’s more from Simon & Schust...
