Last month I blithely commented that January was relatively quiet; this month, naturally, is the busiest February I can remember. At 124 titles—and I have had to be very selective—it’s not far behind September in volume, reflecting publishers’ eagerness to have their books in place for the key World Book Day selling period.

The explosion of the middle grade fantasy market is in full force, led by a swathe of books that struck significant auction or pre-empt deals, including Struan Murray’s Orphans of the Tide, Joseph Elliott’s The Good Hawk, Ross MacKenzie’s Evernight and Dominique Valente...
