February 2019 New Titles: Fiction Previews

This month’s reading was a particular delight, with new novels from three of my absolute favourite writers. Tessa Hadley’s perceptive, nuanced Late in the Day (Cape) is my Book of the Month. Following the success of her Prix Goncourt-winning Lullaby, Faber publishes Leila Slimani’s first novel Adele, a darkly unsettling portrait of a woman veering out of control. Tana French moves to Viking with The Wych Elm, a terrific, psychologically complex crime novel which will, I’m sure, bring her new readers.
