My daughter has the most beautiful hair. Corkscrew curls that, when she was little, crowned her head like twists of treacle. Until recently, however, she rarely wore it down. Because society told her that her hair was “other”; and, despite being more than comfortable with the fact that she’s mixed race (actually seeing it as a superpower) her hair is the one thing that demonstrates the potency of unconscious bias, both in terms of how society views her, and how she therefore viewed herself.
