Discount bookseller The Works is planning to more than double its number of branches, arguing there is room for up to 600 stores in the UK, Retail Week reports.
Citing "sources close to the firm", the publication said in particular the management saw a "big opportunity" for the chain in the south of England.
The retailer currently has 270 stores in its portfolio, and it was revealed last week that private equity parent Endless could be considering selling the company for around £80m. This follows a period of restructuring and cost-cutting, after it was bought out for £17m while in administration.
Retail Week said managing director Bob Lister declined to comment on whether the retailer would be put up for sale next year, but said that it was not for sale currently. It is thought that Endless will examine options in January or February.
