Women's Institute will campaign for libraries

The National Federation of Women's Institutes is to campaign on the issue of library closures, after voting in support of the issue at this afternoon's annual general meeting in Liverpool.

Annie Mauger, chief executive of CILIP, addressed the AGM to urge support for libraries, and the decision to adopt the cause within the WI was carried by an overwhelming majority.

Ruth Bond, chair of the National Federation of Women’s Institutes, said: “WI members confirmed their support for local library services today and have pledged their commitment to fight to prevent local library closures wherever they are proposed. As an educational organisation, WI members clearly recognise the worth that local library services bring to communities, often in isolated areas, and we will now work hard to prevent such services being removed from the areas where they are often needed most.”

Mauger said she was "thrilled that we have a new and powerful friend fighting our corner". She added: "Libraries are an essential education and information resource. They are at the heart of communities across the country and are too important to lose."
