W&N wins auction for debut work Ghost Moth
22.01.13 | Charlotte Williams
Weidenfeld & Nicolson and Orion have acquired Ghost Moth by debut novelist Michele Forbes following an auction.
Editor Sophie Buchan bought UK and Commonwealth rights from Kent D Wolf at Lippincott Massie McQuilkin, with plans to publish in December 2013. It will be published by Bellevue Literary Press in the US.
The book is set during the hot Irish summer of 1969, and follows Katherine, a former actress, and George, a firefighter, as they struggle to keep buried secrets from destroying their marriage.
Buchan said: "I knew from the very first page that I wanted to publish Ghost Moth. Michele Forbes has a voice that demands to be read, a voice with such beauty and power that I found myself spellbound as she took her sentences in directions that were as surprising as they were apt. I'm incredibly excited to be publishing Ghost Moth and introducing a voice so preternaturally assured that it feels odd to call it 'new'".
