Weidenfeld & Nicolson has acquired Tiger Hills, a debut novel by Sarita Mandanna. Kirsty Dunseath, fiction publishing director, bought UK rights in a pre-emptive bid from David Godwin of David Godwin Associates.
The title is set in a coffee plantation in southern India and focuses on several generations, stretching from the late nineteenth century until after WWII. Tiger Hills will be published as a lead fiction title for Weidenfeld & Nicolson in May 2010.
Dunseath said: "David sent this to me on the eve of the London Book Fair and I absolutely loved it. The novel combines stunning descriptions with a fast paced plot that has the epic feel of The Thorn Birds or A Suitable Boy. We believe Sarita Mandanna is a real star in the making."
Godwin said: "Tiger Hills is one of the most wonderful debut novels I have read. It is a unique combination of masterful writing and a thrilling, and emotional, story. It literally moved me to tears."
Tiger Hills was previously bought by Penguin India, for the highest advance it has ever paid for a debut novel.
