The Northallerton Bookshop in North Yorkshire is to close on Saturday after 23 years of trading. Its owner Philip Wicks, who also owns the Castle Hill Bookshop, said that the bookshop had been earning money supplying books to schools and libraries, but the retail part of the business was not strong enough.
"It's increasingly difficult to run a business just by selling books alone. It's not just a problem for indies; even Waterstone's and W H Smith realise this," he said. "It's a shame. Our local customers are very disappointed but the hard commercial reality is that at the end of the day there were not enough of them."
