Special screenings of the new film “Gone Girl” will be held for WH Smith staff and other key retailers in advance of the film release on Thursday (2nd October). Booksellers will be able to discover whether the ending has changed, following reports that author Gillian Flynn rewrote it for the film.
The adaptation of Flynn’s book, published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson, will be officially released in cinemas this Thursday (2nd October), and Orion has been beefing up publicity and marketing activity for the release.
Members of the media were invited by Orion to a first screening last Friday (26th September). Tomorrow (30th September) Orion will host a screening for its own staff, and will invite members of public down to the venue by social media to pick up a free copy of Flynn’s book.
"Gone Girl” stars Ben Affleck as Nick Dunne, who is placed under suspicion when his wife Amy (Rosamund Pike), goes missing in suspicious circumstances. On Twitter and Facebook Orion has been hosting #gonegirlshame, asking people to confess if they have not yet read Gone Girl. To celebrate the film release Orion will this Thursday be asking people on social media whether they are "Team Nick" or "Team Amy".
Meanwhile the Twitter-based Commuter Book Club (#railbookclub) started a two-week competition on 22nd September asking people to tweet their Gone Girl book reviews. The 10 best will win Gone Girl tote bags filled with goodies including film tie-in editions of the book.
Print coverage includes Gone Girl being the Bookclub choice for the November issue of Sainsbury’s magazine, out in October, and interviews with Flynn in Empire, Woman and Home, the Saturday Telegraph magazine and the Guardian among others.
Orion has supplied film posters and bookmarks to UK and Irish retailers, and ran a poster campaign in August and September in airports and on the London Underground encouraging people to read the book before seeing the film.
On Saturday (27th September) readers could download a free e-book of Gone Girl in a promotion held with the Times and eBooks by Sainsbury’s.
Gone Girl has sold 777,426 copies through Nielsen BookScan to date and a film tie-in edition was issued last week (£8.99).
