Waterstones' Clark leaves company

Waterstones' operations director Steve Clark has left the company with immediate effect. His role is being taken over by managing director James Daunt, who told staff that the company was entering a "period of very great change". 

Waterstones employees were informed of the development yesterday (11th July) via an internal communication from Daunt, who also announced he would be assuming the role of acting operations director.

Clark joined Waterstones as head of retail operations in 2009 and was appointed operations director soon after Daunt arrived at the company in July last year.

In an email to staff, Daunt said: "It is with regret that I announce that Steve Clark has decided to leave the business to pursue new opportunities. I thank him for his hard work and commitment over the last year and wish him every success in the future."

Daunt added that he looked forward to working closely with the operations and shop teams "as we engage in a period of very great change". He added: "It presents considerable challenges but also an opportunity we must seize. Your support is greatly appreciated."

Waterstones announced in May it had signed a commercial agreement with Amazon to sell its Kindle e-readers in store, enabling customers to download Kindle books from wifi which will be fitted as part of a store-refurbishment programme, which is currently underway.
