Waterstone's has launched a period of consultation with staff in its Brentford and Solihull offices about a restructure. It is unclear how many jobs are at risk but the changes will affect the buying team, among other parts of the head office. A similar reorganisation of HMV's head office is also under way.
In an email to publishers, outgoing product director Tim Watson said: "We are currently in consultation with the individuals affected. I am afraid that there is little that we can share with you at this time but we will be able to provide you with further information once the process is complete. We thank you for your consideration whilst the consultation takes place."
A Waterstone's spokesperson said it was too early to say how many jobs would be affected or when the consultation process would be completed. It is believed Waterstone's employs around 150 people between its Solihull and Brentford offices.
The announcement follows HMV's disastrous Christmas results, that were unveiled last week. For the five weeks to 1st January, like-for-like and total sales fell 0.4% at Waterstone's. At HMV UK and Ireland like-for-likes slumped 13.6% and total sales were down 11.9%. The bookseller is planning to close 20 stores during the next 12 months. HMV warned full year profits would be at the lower end of expectations.
