Bolton’s most famous export, TV presenter and BBC Radio 1 DJ Vernon Kay is to write about the classic north/south divide and the regional tribes and stereotypes of Britain in a comedy title signed by Penguin’s Michael Joseph imprint.
Katy Follain, Michael Joseph non-fiction publisher, acquired UK and Commonwealth rights to Vernon Kay’s Great British Experiment for an undisclosed sum from Gordon Wise at Curtis Brown, working in association with James Grant Media.
Kay will take a whistle-stop tour of the country, looking at the “quirks and customs” of the British and conducting experiments such as whether a Scot will deep-fry his shoe or if commuters on a London bus will join in his singalong as enthusiastically as those on an equivalent Bolton bus.
Follain said: “We are hugely excited about this project. Kay has firmly fixed himself in the public consciousness as one of the best-loved presenters and DJs in the UK. This book has got his personality stamped all over it and is perfect for his fanbase. We are going to get the whole nation debating the themes within it in a fun and interactive way.”
Kay said: “I’m overwhelmed to be working with Penguin on such a fantastic project. I’ve wanted to write a book for a long time now so I’m very excited. I can’t wait to get on the road to explore and find out loads about the UK I never knew before.”
Vernon Kay’s Great British Experiment will be published in October 2010.
