'Unique' Brazilian poetry collection published

Arc Publishing will release what is said to be is the only poetry collection by a Brazilian writer to be in print from a UK press.

Silence River by Antonio Moura, translated by Stefan Tobler (pictured), will be published on 31st October to coincide with a UK visit by the poet. Moura will visit London, Norwich, Bath, Yorkshire and Manchester, conducting workshops on the importance of cultural and language translation for foreign writers, as well as reading from his collection. He hopes to flag up the significance of poetry in translation.

The Brazilian government supported the project and paid for Tobler’s translation. Tobler said: “Publishers can benefit from working with foreign writers as it can help them to discover new writers. Literature has always reinvented itself and it is natural to see what is happening in other places.”
 

Silence River will be published as part of the Visible Poets series edited by Jean Boase-Beier. It has been running since 2000 to promote poets that are well known in their own countries but not in the UK. Each collection is bi-lingual, meaning that the original language and the English translation are on inter-facing pages.
