Two Doncaster libraries given temporary reprieve
01.01.70 | Graeme Neill
Two libraries due to close in Doncaster have been given a temporary stay of execution.
Last month the council announced it was withdrawing funding from 14 of its 26 libraries. The council's Labour group argued the mayor's decision to close Denaby and Carcroft libraries went against council strategy. Those two libraries were due to be replaced with a mobile service with the other 12 mooted for closure to be run using volunteers.
However, the Denaby and Carcroft libraries will now remain open until 10th November, when the issue will be discussed by the council's overview and scrutiny committee.
Labour councillor Kevin Rodgers told the BBC he planned to raise concerns about the closure of all 14 libraries and suggest other ways the council could save money. He said: "We've got [to] look at other things that are not frontline services."

Things have come to a pretty pass when a measly extra week is described as a "reprieve". United with the city's campaigners and library users, we hold our collective breath to see what Doncaster does next.
