Granta magazine's deputy editor Ellah Allfrey has made two acquisitions for Granta Books: a book on the Rwanda genocide and a collection of American short stories.
Of Martin Kimani's The Work of War, for which Allfrey bought world rights excluding north America from David Godwin, she said: "I think this has the potential to be an outstanding, meditative, beautifully written book, an important book that could help us rethink the Rwandan genocide and mass-killing in general." The book will be published in spring 2013.
She also acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Arabella Stein for Battleborn by 25-year-old Claire Vaye Watkins, a set of short stories set in Nevada where the author grew up. Allfrey said the stories were "wonderfully muscular and evocative". Granta will publish in spring 2012.
