Trapeze is publishing Tattletale, the first adult fiction - a psychological thriller - from children's writer and Costa nominated novelist Sarah J. Naughton.
Senior commissioning editor Sam Eades acquired world rights (all languages) for the novel in a two-book deal struck by Eve White at the Eve White Literary Agency.
The book, featuring two "flawed" protagonists, was Eades' first acquisition for the new imprint. She called it "ambitious, unpredictable and twisty, combining compulsive storytelling with an emotional pull that kept me turning the pages late into the night".
Naughton, based in London, studied English at UCL and previously held down a job as an advertising copywriter for 10 years. Her debut novel, The Hanged Man Rises (Simon & Schuster Children's UK) was shortlisted for the 2013 Costa award and her second children's thriller, The Blood List (S&S Children's UK), was published in 2014.
She said: “I’ve always been fascinated by the stories human beings tell ourselves to make our lives bearable. We write our own backstories, blaming our parents or our boss or society when our lives don’t turn out how we imagine them, and as long as those houses of cards are not broken down, we can survive quite happily. In Tattletale I wanted to write about someone whose past is so traumatic that she retreats into a self-delusion so complete it makes us question the value of truth.”
White said: “I am absolutely chuffed that Orion will be launching Trapeze with Sarah. SJ Naughton is an exciting new psychological thriller voice and she couldn’t be with a more dynamic and creative editor than Sam Eades. Sarah and Sam are a truly exciting pair and I cannot wait to see Tattletale released next year."
