Transworld buys bestselling US debut
01.01.70 | Katie Allen
Transworld has acquired a debut novel which has already sold over 250,000 copies in the US, according to the publisher.
Catherine Cobain, publishing director, acquired UK and Commonwealth rights (exc Canada) in The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom.
Set in southern Virginia in the late 18th century, The Kitchen House tells the story of seven-year-old Irish orphan Lavinia, who is transported to a tobacco plantation to work as a servant.
Cobain said: “The Kitchen House is a wonderful book—beautifully written, heartfelt and deeply moving, and perfect material for book group reading."
Doubleday will publish in hardback in March 2013, with a Black Swan paperback to follow in September 2013.
