Tranströmer awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature

Swedish writer and poet Tomas Tranströmer has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

The committee behind the decision awarded the accolade to the 80-year-old "because, through his condensed, transluscent images, he gives us fresh access to reality”.

Tranströmer's most recent translated collection New Collected Poems was published in a revised and expanded edition by Bloodaxe Books in April this year and contains all the poems he has written during the past 40 years. The Northumberland-based publisher has already ordered a reprint with reference to the prize on the jacket.

Last year’s winner was Peruvian author Mario Vargas Llosa, with Germany’s Herta Muller accoladed in 2009. British author Doris Lessing won in 2007.
