Trade colleagues pay tribute to Christopher Davis

Former colleagues have paid tribute to Dorling Kindersley stalwart Christopher Davis, who has died at the age of 71.

Davis joined the company at its outset in 1974, and stayed with DK for more than 30 years, ultimately becoming group publisher. During that time, the company grew from a small start-up, showing off its wares in a Frankfurt hotel room, into an internationally recognised brand.

He left the company in 2005, and four years later wrote Eyewitness: The Rise and Fall of Dorling Kindersley (Harriman House), charting its successes, its disastrous Star Wars publishing venture and eventual purchase by Penguin parent company Pearson. He described the book as: “a celebration of what was, for many of us who worked there, the best years of our lives".

DK c.e.o. John Duhigg said: “Christopher's death will prompt great sadness throughout DK. So many members of the team worked with—and were inspired by—him. Not a day goes by when his name isn't referenced. His vision and legacy are still very much alive in DK today.”

John Styring, c.e.o. of Igloo Books, paid tribute to Davis on Twitter, saying: "Very sad news that Christopher Davis has died. He was a great character, true gent & creative genius whilst always being very approachable.”
