Tor buys Truthwitch fantasy series

Tor in the UK and US have acquired a “thrilling” YA/adult fantasy adventure series.

Senior commissioning editor at Tor UK, Bella Pagan, bought UK and Commonwealth rights to Susan Dennard’s Truthwitch and two sequels from Jo Volpe of New Leaf Literary & Media, Inc, while Whitney Ross, editor at Tor US, acquired the US rights.

Tor said readers could “expect intrigue, action and conspiracy, with some wonderfully tense romance woven into the excitement” from the books.

Truthwitch is based on a continent where everyone is born with magic and witchcraft is failing as people are corrupted by their own magic. Unrest also grows as a 20-year truce ends between three warring empires, meaning trading treaties cease and war threatens.

“Only a mythical pair of witches can heal the taint in the land and bring balance,” Tor said. “But the two young friends are yet to discover their fate, even as their world heads towards chaos.”

Pagan said: “Truthwitch is lively, fun and utterly entertaining with one of the best magic systems I've come across in a long, long time. And it's always brilliant when we can work with our colleagues at Tor US, sharing our enthusiasm for great books.”

Dennard is based in the US, and used to be a marine biologist before becoming a full-time novelist. She is also the author of the Something Strange and Deadly trilogy (Harper Teen) in the US, as well as co-author on a serialised science fiction project with New York Times bestseller Sarah J Maas.

Tor US and UK plan to release Truthwitch in hardback in autumn 2015.
