Writer Tim Guest has died at the age of 34, having suffered a suspected heart attack. Guest was the author of the memoir My Life in Orange (Granta), which told the story of his childhood growing up in a religious cult. His follow-up Second Lives (Hutchinson) explored the appeal of virtual worlds.
Paul Sidey, Guest's editor at Hutchinson, said: "Tim only emailed me on Monday to suggest that we should meet up soon to talk about an idea he had for his next book. So the news of his sudden death comes as a jolting shock."
Sidey added: "Tim was a diffident man, but when he came to the offices of Random House to give an illustrated talk about his second book, Second Lives, he was confident, funny, enlightening and provocative. He even arranged for virtual contacts to answer questions on screen. Hollywood was impressed too, and film rights were acquired for Brad Pitt.
"There was nothing computer-generated about Tim. It is very sad that his distinctive voice has been silenced."
