Tesco to sell Robbie Williams exclusively
02.09.10 | Victoria Gallagher
Tesco has signed an exclusive deal with Ebury Press to sell Robbie Williams' new autobiography.
The Sun reports that the supermarket has six months exclusivity' for You Know Me from its publication date of 20th September.
The title is fully illustrated and will recount the Take That singer's "key moments" from the last 20 years. It is co-written by Chris Heath who previously wrote Feel, about Williams, published by Ebury Press. The release of the title is part of Williams' celebration of 20 years in music.
You Know Me will be published as a £20 hardback, although the Sun said the book was expected to be sold at half price.
Ebury Press also previously published Robbie Williams: Somebody Someday by Williams and Mark McCrum.

Will Robbie be signing launch copies at the meat counter?
Do we know if this will appear with an enhanced eBook or app yet? It should do as the target market and promotional opportunities are ideal.
Tesco will have exclusive deal and yet its reported that they will still sell it at 50% off. No wonder the book trade is dying.
And as to the exclusive deal, I'm sure Waterstones and WHS etc who have supported Ebury titles in the past will be very p****d at being bypassed here. I guess Ebury reckon Tescos are the future of bookselling now.
Isn't this, like, his THIRD autobiography?
This will tell the fans all they have already read in the paper and online... I bet it has lots of photos and will appeal to Mummy. Bah.
Well done RHG - sure this is a great deal for you - I hope that you are happy to have put another nail in the coffin of High Street specialist book retailers!. I will, with immediate effect, reduce my orders for RHG titles across the board - and hope that many others do to - especially the chains.
It is small minded "fast buck" deals like this that really get to me - Why don't senior people in the sales function at major publishers really think about the bigger picture - if they lose their core customers (ie specialist book retailers) - who will be buying most of what they publish?
Everyone should take action - hit RHG where it hurts - reduce your orders for their titles and let them them feel the pain where it will hurt them most.
The 'buy' button on the tesco site seems to have been disabled. Curiouser and curiouser...
At least Tesco, Ebury & Robbie are trying to get some excitement in to the Book market. I think we should all take our hats off to them and wish them well.
Aghast - "Why don't senior people in the sales function at major publishers really think about the bigger picture - if they lose their core customers (ie specialist book retailers) - who will be buying most of what they publish". Maybe because specialist book retailers are rapidly becoming irrelevant to publishers! Most large publishers are only interested in Waterstones, WHS and Amazon. They do not need us!
I fear it is that old NBA cliche "Books are different", publishers have monopoly of supply so do not care about the multiplicity of sellers at the end of the supply chain, where else can they go? The independent bookseller (including chains) will have a hard time into the future.
"At least Tesco, Ebury & Robbie are trying to get some excitement in to the Book market." - sorry, excitement? You do realise that this is Robbie Williams don't you? What an absurd statement. *Yawn*
If I were Waterstone's Smiths or Amazon I'd be talking hard to Ebury right now. Give me something serious as compensation or forget it, we'll work with the other publishers and kiss the RH goodbye.
I don't understand this - does the publisher want to make money?
Not sure how they can if the only place stocking it is Tesco.
Ridiculous.
It would be helpful if Victoria Gallagher would do some journalism and name the individual at Ebury who agreed this arrangement.
Just regard this as an instant Bargain Book , like a Catherine Cookson bind up . Dont get upset about Ebury selling their once proud brand like Colour Library .
Surely the move by the publisher is significant NOT because it indicates support of the grocery sector, but because it puts down a significant marker down to the online accounts that there are still currently bigger players in the overall market...
Same old same old...
Is anyone else seriously going to stock this after 6 months? If the Tesco order is SOR then this will be the biggest remainder
Everything you ever needed to know about book-pricing is contained in this story. RRP is
Have I missed something here? Surely if it has never been on offer at
It is easy really.. Tesco have a USP that they feel draws others into their "grocery" stores where they will purchase other product, Ebury have a guaranteed sale of quantity, Robbie has a big fat advance and everyone is happy! Except of course the poor old "proper" bookseller, and who cares about them? As to value,
