Telegram has signed a memoir from Forward Prize-nominated poet Hannah Lowe.
Mitchell Albert, commissioning editor of the Saqi Books imprint, signed UK and Commonwealth rights in Long Time No See in a deal with Isobel Dixon at Blake Friedmann.
The book follow's Lowe's relationship with her father, Chick, an immigrant from Jamaica, who made his living as a gambler and card sharp.
Chick was also the inspiration for Lowe's debut collection of poetry, Chick (Bloodaxe), which is shortlisted for the Forward Prize for best first collection. The winner will be announced in October.
Lowe was born in Ilford, studying at the University of Sussex, and currently completing a PhD in creative writing at Newcastle University. She was awarded an Arts Council England grant for working on Long Time No See.
Albert said: "As a poet, Hannah is already one of the most exciting new voices on the scene; this is her debut in prose, and it is every bit as captivating as her poetry. She portrays complex, troubled personalities with exquisite skill and compassion—not least that of her father, the human vortex at the heart of the book."
