Tate Publishing is to launch iBook editions of two of its most successful titles, alongside its first range of e-books.
The publisher will add extra content including video to the iBook editions of popular backlist books How to Paint Like Turner edited by Nicola Moorby and Ian Warrell and Street Art by Cedar Lewisohn.
A total of nine e-books are being published on the same date (5th September). Tate is releasing three textbooks in digital form: 1100-1600: Medieval to Renaissance edited by Kim W Woods; 1600-1850: Academy to Avant-Garde, edited by Emma Barker; and 1850-2010: Modernity to Globalisation, edited by Steve Edwards and Paul Wood. The books were originally published physically with The Open University last year. All 250 colour images will be zoomable for in-depth study.
Meanwhile a book on Ai Weiwei's Sunflower Seeds installation (Ai Weiwei: Sunflower Seeds edited by Juliet Bingham) and an autobiography from Japanese artist Yoyai Kusama (Infinity Net, translated by Ralph McCarthy) are also being released, alongside short e-books describing the artistic process by Max Beckmann (On My Painting); John Martin (Sketches of My Life); William Blake (Seen in My Visions); and Henry Moore (On Being a Sculptor).
A spokesperson said: "Tate Publishing has taken Tate’s general remit to increase public understanding and enjoyment of art and married this with a ‘digital as a part of everything’ philosophy to bring new and established artists to both public and academic markets."
The e-books are available on a range of formats, depending on the title, with prices ranging from £2.99 to £19.99.
