Simon & Schuster increased worldwide publishing revenues by 5% year-on-year to $225m (£135m) in the fourth quarter of 2013, which the company attributed to an increase in print book sales.
Publishing OBITDA increased 19% to $37m (£22m) in the quarter ending 31st December 2013, with the growth driven by higher revenues.
The publisher’s operating income also rose 32% in the year of 2013 to $106m (£67m), parent company CBS Corporation reported last night (12th February).
However, the operating income figure includes restructuring charges of $1m for the fourth quarter of 2013.
S&S UK chief executive Ian Chapman commented: “The year 2013 was a big year for Simon & Schuster UK especially in the areas of adult fiction, where we were up 16.5% against a market that was 17% down overall. Alongside stellar sales from our established adult fiction authors such as Philippa Gregory and Lynda La Plante, who continue to take the number one bestseller position year on year, S&S saw tremendous growth with emerging brand authors.
"Santa Montefiore’s frontlist and re-issued backlist both made the Top Ten bestseller lists and we enjoyed considerable literary critical acclaim as the publisher of The Son by Philipp Meyer.”
Chapman added: “The company also underwent some important restructuring, including growing its digital sales team, who have overseen an increase of 75% in revenue this year, with a plan to continue growth with a strong focus on international sales going forward.”
He said the company’s children’s division had also performed well and picked out the Dork Diaries and Darren Shan as particularly successes. “We anticipate even more substantial growth in 2014,” Chapman said.
