Simon & Schuster has bought a debut novel on pre-empt by Times journalist Chris Smyth, based on a partial manuscript.
Francesca Main, senior commissioning editor, bought UK and Commonwealth rights excluding Canada to Dinner at Mine from Jon Elek at AP Watt for an undisclosed sum. The book is about four London couples who embark upon a dinner party competition between themselves. Main described the book as "an Abigail’s party for the Come Dine with Me generation".
She said: "I couldn’t be more excited about publishing Dinner with Mine. It's fresh, funny and spot-on social satire with a hilarious cast of middle-class foodies. I’m sure there are many readers who will identify with the characters, whether they’d like to admit it or not."
The book will be published as a paperback original in September 2011.
