Little, Brown imprint Sphere has acquired the memoir of an expert kidnapping and ransom consultant.
World English rights were purchased from Ben Mason at Fox Mason by Sphere's publishing director Adam Strange for an undisclosed fee.
The Negotiator: My life at the Heart of the Hostage Trade, written by the author under the pseudonym Sam Lopez, details over a decade's worth of experience in the field. Originally a clinical and forensic psychologist, Lopez has worked with multinational corporations, private clients and government bodies such as Scotland Yard on kidnapping cases.
Strange said: "The kidnapping industry is huge—it's estimated to be worth over £1 billion globally with over 12,000 people taken hostage each year, but until now there hasn't been a mass-market non-fiction title that has explored the subject, so I'm hugely excited to be breaking new ground with this book."
The Negotiator will be published in hardback and C-format paperback in July.
