Sony's two tablets to ship in the autumn
27.04.11 | Bookseller Staff
Electronics giant Sony has unveiled two rival tablets that it hopes will target the Apple iPad market. Codenamed S1 and S2 the devices will not be available for sale until the autumn, but nevertheless boast, according to Sony, a "perfect combination of hardware, content and network with seamless usability for a high-quality, engaging entertainment experience".
The Sony Tablet is equipped with Android 3.0. Both tablets will have WiFi and WAN (3G/4G). S1 has a 9.4-inch display, while S2 has two 5.5-inch displays that can be folded for easy portability.
"Sony Tablet delivers an entertainment experience where users can enjoy cloud-based services on-the-go at any time. We're aiming to create a new lifestyle by integrating consumer hardware including Sony Tablet with content and network," said Kunimasa Suzuki, corporate executive, SVP, and deputy president of Consumer Products & Services Group.
The Guardian's technology blog drily notes that Sony is bidding for the record in the time lag between announcing a tablet and actually putting it on sale.
