Solicitors apply for injunction for Isle of Wight

Leigh Day & Co solicitors has confirmed it has applied for an interim injunction preventing Isle of Wight Council transferring the running of any of its libraries into community hands until a court had determined whether to grant a judicial review into its plans.

Five libraries on the island are under threat of closure.

Ian Anderson, director for community wellbeing and social care for Isle of Wight Council, said: "I can confirm the council is now in receipt of new documentation and will be considering its response to it over the coming days.

"We are not prepared to make detailed comment at this stage other than to reaffirm that our position remains that the council considers that its decision on the future of the library service meets the statutory duty to provide a comprehensive and efficient library service and we are delighted by the responses that we are receiving from members of the community coming forward to be part of delivering the new community libraries."

Campaigners against the closure of the Isle of Wight libraries are confident a judicial review will be granted.

A judicial review into the proposed closure of 10 libraries in Gloucestershire will go ahead, a court ruled yesterday. Today, the Telegraph reports that singer Nick Cave and Sinead O'Connor are the latest high-profile figures to join the Gloucestershire campaign.

Re your last paragraph (and thanks for this welcome report) I believe these hugely popular singing stars want to stick up for all public libraries, but are specifically lending their support now to save Kensal Rise Library and raise money for the imminent Brent legal challenge. Hats off to them, the eminent authors and other luminaries who do this so generously !
