The shortlists for this year's Futurebook Innovation Awards, sponsored by Kobo, have been revealed. In the running are Random House's Black Crown project, the campaign for Holly Smale's Geek Girl and the Faber Social website.
Meanwhile Macmillan Publishing c.e.o. John Sergent and Goodreads c.e.o. Otis Chandler are among those in line to be named the trade's most inspiring digital person of 2013.
Over 220 entries were received from 12 different countries for the awards, now in their third year. The combined Penguin Random House Group leads the field with five nominations. Both HarperCollins and Bloomsbury are shortlisted three times, while Faber, Touch Press, Nosy Crow, Sourcebooks, Macmillan, Total Boox and Snowbooks all have two entries.
Shortlisted in the Best Adult Digital Book category, which includes apps, enhanced e-books and other products, are: 40 Years of Queen (multi touch electronic edition) from Stephen Carey at the Carlton Publishing Group; Black Crown by Rob Sherman from Dan Franklin at Random House; Disney Animated from Louise Rice at Touch Press; Facts are Sacred from Nick Sidwell at Guardian Books and Grayson Perry: The Vanity of Small Differences app from Hayward Publishing.
Shortlisted for Best Children's Digital Book, again including apps, enhanced e-books and other products, are: Axel Scheffler's Flip Flap Farm from Kate Wilson at Nosy Crow; Lucy Ladybird from Sharon King-Chai at Eye Fly High; Oz Tales StoryGame from Hau Man Chow at FamLoop Limited; Rounds: Parker Penguin from Camilla Reid at Nosy Crow; and Winnie-the-Pooh from Tim Jones at Egmont Press.
In the Best Digital Marketing Campaign category, the shortlisted campaigns are those for: 10 Billion by Stephen Emmott from Kalle Mattila at Penguin Press; Dead Good from Lynsey Dalladay at Random House; Game of Thrones from Adam Humphrey and Katie Sadler at HarperCollins; Geek Girl by Holly Smale from Hannah Bourne and Abby Tayleure at HarperCollins Children's Books; Gollancz Geeks from Jen McMenemy at Orion; Kiss Me First by Lottie Moggach from Jodie Mullish with Rosanna Boscawen and Naomi Bacon at Pan Macmillan; and Samantha Shannon's The Bone Season from Amanda Shipp at Bloomsbury.
Shortlisted in the category for Best Publisher Website are: Drama Online from Jenny Ridout at Bloomsbury; Writers & Artists from Eela Devani at Bloomsbury; The Novel Cure from Catherine Cannon at Canongate; Rough Guides from Tim Chester at Dorling Kindersley; Faber Social from Gemma Lovett at Faber & Faber; and Pizza Pilgrims from Orlando Mowbray at HarperCollins.
In the category for Best Reference Digital Book, again including apps, enhanced e-books and other products, the shortlisted entries are: Beethoven's 9th Symphony for iPad from Max Whitby at Touch Press; Discworld: The Ankh-Morpork Map from Sophie Murray at Random House; The Animator's Survival Kit from Henry Volans at Faber; The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank from Kirk Bowe and Jen Porter at Beyond The Story; and Timeline WW1 with Dan Snow from Tom Clifford at Ballista Media.
Shortlisted for best start-up are: BitLit Media Inc from Peter Hudson; BookVibe from Ramesh Haridas; Native from Levon Rivers; Snowbooks/General Products Ltd from Emma Barnes; and Total Boox Ltd from Yoav Lorch.
Shortlisted for Best Technology Innovation sponsored by ePubDirect are Coursesmart Ltd from Fionnuala Duggan; BooXtream from Icontact; Linden Lab from Versu; RM Books from RM Books Ltd, Dale Peters; Snowbooks/General Products Ltd from Emma Barnes; Sourcebooks from Dominique Raccah for Put Me In the Story; and Total Boox Ltd from Yoav Lorch.
The final category, for Most Inspiring Digital Person sponsored by the Frankfurt Book Fair, will be contested between Goodreads founder and c.e.o. Otis Chandler; Richard Nash, head of partnerships and content at Small Demons; Dominique Raccah, founder and publisher of Sourcebooks; Charlie Redmayne, now c.e.o. of HarperCollins, formerly c.e.o. of Pottermore; and Macmillan c.e.o. John Sargent.
Sam Missingham, awards founder, said: "The quality and diversity of the entries has grown hugely. It is very encouraging to see how much creativity is being embraced across the book business."
Winners will be announced at the FutureBook conference on 21st November.
