Shafak to be LBF Author of the Day

Turkish writer Elif Shafak will be London Book Fair's Market Focus Author of the Day on Tuesday 16th April.

The writer's eight novels, composed in both Turkish and English, include The Forty Rules of Love, The Flea Palace and Honour (all published by Viking). Honour, the story of a young Kurdish woman whose brother has committed murder, was longlisted for the 2012 Man Asian Literary Prize.

Shafak said: "Stories make a difference in my country and all around the world. They connect us across borders. By giving voice to the voiceless, making visible the invisible, and challenging intolerance and bigotry, storytellers can mend the bridges that extremist ideologies smash, dividing humanity into islands of 'us' versus 'them'. It is a pleasure and an honour to have been chosen one of the Authors of the Day at the London Book Fair this year. 'The Orient' will meet 'The Occident' in Sotryland where the world is truly round and every place it at equal distance from the centre - that is, the love of literature."

Shafak appears as part of LBF's Market Focus programme showcasing Turkey's publishing industry. Further Authors of the Day will be announced for 15th and 17th April.
