Serpent's Tail has bought Australian novel The Dressmaker, soon to be filmed with Kate Winslet in the leading role.
The book, by Rosalie Ham, is described as "a gothic novel of love, hate and haute couture set in the 1950s". Talented couturier Tilly Dunnage returns after many years in Europe to her small Australian outback hometown and must unravel the secrets of her past.
Kate Winslet and Judy Davis have been cast in the film, which is being adapted by writer director Jocelyn Moorhouse, who calls the book "'Unforgiven' with a sewing machine."
Serpent's Tail publisher Hannah Westland called the novel "a brilliantly constructed and mischievous novel of small town rivalries and secrets, filled with a case of loveable eccentrics".
Westland bought UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada and ANZ, and with exclusive Europe, from Jenny Darling at Jenny Darling Associates in Australia.
In Australia, the publisher is Duffy & Snellgrove and the book has sold over 55,000 copies.
