Only half of book stocks in school libraries are deemed to be at a "good" level, and almost a third of libraries have insufficient space, new research has revealed.
Despite this, almost a third of services have had budgets for stock and resources cut, while almost half have been frozen at last year's levels, the same study - commissioned by the School Libraries Group of the Chartered Institute of Library & Information Professionals - found.
The report, entitled “School libraries in the UK: a worthwhile past, a difficult present—and a transformed future?”, also stated school book stocks do not generally grow as student numbers increase and 13% of book stocks were considered “patchy or poor”;
The survey, taken earlier this year, included 1,542 secondary and independent schools and 651 primary schools
