School libraries aim for world record on National Libraries Day

School libraries will be celebrating National Libraries Day with a Guinness World Record attempt.

Pupils from schools across the country will all contribute to an effort to hold the world¹s largest simultaneous story writing workshop on Wednesday 6th February.

Author Matt Haig, Booktrust's writer-in-residence, will write the beginning of a story, with children invited to try and finish it in an hour. More than 50 schools are currently signed up with more in the process of joining.

The project, called Parallel Universes, is aimed at years six to nine so both primary and secondary schools can take part.

National Libraries Day will be held on Saturday 9th February, as a culmination of a week of celebrations in libraries across the UK.

Barbara Band, CILIP vice-president and a school librarian, said: "As well as celebrating National Libraries Day, this is a wonderful way to involve the school library in an event that demonstrates how reading and writing can be fun and exciting."
