Pearson chief executive Marjorie Scardino has climbed the rankings of this year's MediaGuardian 100 from 41 to 26, as fellow publishing chiefs, Random House chairman and chief executive Gail Rebuck and PFD chief executive Caroline Michel, make new entries on to the power list.
The MediaGuardian 100 is the Guardian's annual guide to the most powerful people in media, with candidates judged on their cultural, economic and political influence in the UK. The list takes in all sectors of the media, including broadcasting, publishing, digital media, advertising, marketing and PR.
Scardino features highest from the publishing industry, while Rebuck ranks 36 as "the most powerful woman in UK publishing".
Michel entered the list at 73, as head of "the most talked-about talent agency of the moment, PFD", says the MediaGuardian.
Luke Johnson, Borders UK chairman, is ranked at 20 for his role as Channel 4 chairman, and BBC Worldwide chief executive John Smith features at 49.
Authors on the list include Jeremy Clarkson at 58, Stephen Fry at 54 and Katie Price at 83.
