Sheryl Sandberg has written a foreword to a new Yellow Kite book called When to Jump by Mike Lewis.
Lewis is the founder and chief executive of When to Jump, an online community featuring the individuals, stories and ideas relating to leaving something comfortable in order to pursue a passion. Sandberg is the chief operating officer at Facebook and author of Lean In (W H Allen).
Liz Gough, publisher at Yellow Kite, acquired UK & Commonwealth rights in When to Jump: If the Job You Have Isn’t the Life You Want by Mike Lewis from Sara Menguc representing Alice Martell of The Martell Agency.
Lewis was an investor at Bain Capital Ventures when he developed the idea for When to Jump, based on his experience leaving his desk to chase a dream of competing on the professional squash tour – an adventure across 200,000 miles, six continents and nearly 50 countries. Goldman Sachs named him one of the 100 most intriguing entrepreneurs in 2017.
The publisher said the book blends inspiration with pragmatism to encourage jumping, but done correctly: emphasising that no jump is made impulsively or overnight – instead, a jump requires planning, thought, and preparation.
Gough said: “Mike’s book feels so timely in this era where people are choosing to work in new and different ways and are keen to pursue their passions and make them into their new careers. The stories in the book are so inspirational yet also rooted in reality – if you are determined to make a change and jump, it’s incredibly motivating knowing there are others out there who have done it already.”
She added: “And as Mike shows in the book, a jump doesn’t need to be leaving a job: the details around “internal” jumps within an organisation are equally compelling.”
Lewis said the title started with a question he couldn’t shake: when do you chase your dreams? He began collecting narratives to help answer this question five years ago to help people make a jump.
“As the content piled up and insights appeared, what I discovered is that when done right, chasing a dream and pursuing a passion is never something you will regret,” Lewis said. “But you have to do it right. Today, after hundreds of interviews and more research, I’ve put these learnings into this book. We all have a little voice in our head, a jump we’d like to take. My hope is that, whether it’s now or later on in time, this book will help you make yours.”
When to Jump will be published on the Yellow Kite list as a trade paperback original in January 2018, and Mike will be visiting the UK to promote the title.
