Poetry publisher Salt has launched a children's list, dedicated to "showcasing poets and poetry" to younger readers.
Salt Kids has its own dedicated website (http://saltpublishing.com/kids/" target="_blank">http://saltpublishing.com/kids/) which features audio and video clips, classics, reviews, lesson plans and feature articles, as well as practical ideas and free resources for teaching poetry in the classroom. Salt has already signed a number of writers including the former children’s laureate Michael Rosen, Wes Magee, Philip Gross and Pie Corbett.
Director Chris Hamilton-Emery said: "We felt we had an obligation to find new ways to take poetry to children, to help develop the audiences of the future, and to support teachers and literature professionals in the work they do with young people.
"The list and our Salt Kids website are part of a broader strategy to encourage new children’s writers, too, and to reach out to young people in fresh and creative ways. We’re all concerned with edging poetry back in the centre of the culture where it belongs."
Last month, it was announced that Hamilton-Emery had moved sideways to become sales and marketing director as part of a wider restructuring, that would lead to expansion.
