Rowling is best for 25 years

The Telegraph has more on the top 25 authors as voted for by Waterstone's staff and readers of the newspaper. Unsurprisingly, the best book of the past 25 years is J K Rowling's Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. "If the list gives food for thought, it is that analysing British literary tastes is a perilous exercise. We are a nation of very broad interests."

"The top 25 contains a Booker Prize winner - Yann Martel's Life of Pi; some beach reads - The Da Vinci Code and Kate Mosse's Labyrinth; powerful politics - Jung Chang's Wild Swans; and much highly praised literary fiction - Sebastian Faulks's Birdsong, Mark Haddon's The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time and Vikram Seth's A Suitable Boy."
